The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has proposed cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) as one of the primary treatments of choice," write Ian Goodyer, from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and colleagues from the Adolescent Depression Antidepressant and Psychotherapy Trial (ADAPT). "Specifically, their guidelines recommend that SSRIs be prescribed only in conjunction with a specialised psychological treatment such as CBT, based on the results from the treatment of adolescent depression study (TADS) in the United States. For adolescents with moderate to severe major depression there is no evidence that the combination of CBT plus an SSRI in the presence of routine clinical care contributes to an improved outcome by 28 weeks compared with the provision of routine clinical care plus an SSRI alone

"Usual care with an SSRI and usual care with an SSRI plus CBT are both associated with similar improvements in depression outcomes at 12 and 28 weeks in adolescents and older children with moderate to severe depression.
Use of usual care with an SSRI and usual care with an SSRI plus CBT are both associated with reduced suicidality and self-harm in adolescents and older children with moderate to severe depression over time."
